Visa Inc. is a global financial services corporation based in Foster City, California. The company enables electronic funds transfers worldwide, primarily through Visa-branded credit and debit cards. While Visa itself does not issue cards, extend credit, or set consumer fees, it provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they use to offer credit, debit, prepaid, and cash-access services to their customers. In 2009, Visa’s network processed 62 billion transactions, amounting to a total volume of $4.4 trillion.
In September 2007, Visa introduced Visa payWave, a contactless payment technology that allows cardholders to simply wave their cards near contactless payment terminals, eliminating the need to swipe or insert them. This technology is similar to MasterCard’s PayPass and American Express’s ExpressPay, both of which use RFID technology.
In 2013, Visa launched Visa Checkout, an online payment system designed to simplify the checkout process by eliminating the need for users to share their card details with retailers. With Visa Checkout, users can store their personal and payment information, making it easy to complete purchases with a single username and password across participating online merchants.
