The Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation (LF) is a non-profit technology consortium established in 2000 through the merger of Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Free Standards Group (FSG). Its primary mission is to standardize Linux, foster its growth, and promote its adoption in the commercial sector. The foundation also supports the collaborative development of open source software projects.

Initially formed as OSDL in 2000, the organization evolved into its current form after merging with the Free Standards Group. The Linux Foundation sponsors key figures in the Linux community, including creator Linus Torvalds and lead maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman. It is backed by prominent global companies such as AT&T, Cisco, Google, Hitachi, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Samsung, Tencent, and VMware, alongside a network of developers worldwide.

In recent years, the Linux Foundation has broadened its scope by offering events, training, certifications, and support for open source projects. Some of the major projects hosted by the foundation include Automotive Grade Linux, Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP), Hyperledger, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Cloud Foundry Foundation, and the Xen Project.
