Mastercard Incorporated is a global financial services company headquartered in Purchase, New York, in Westchester County. Its primary business is facilitating payment transactions between merchant banks and card-issuing banks or credit unions for customers using Mastercard-branded debit and credit cards. Since 2006, Mastercard has been a publicly traded company.

Initially known as Interbank/Master Charge, Mastercard was founded by several California banks to compete with the BankAmericard, which later became Visa. In 2010, the company expanded its e-commerce services by acquiring DataCash, a UK-based provider specializing in payment processing and fraud management.

In 2012, Mastercard introduced an expanded mobile contactless payment program, reaching markets across the Middle East. Two years later, the company partnered with Apple to integrate its mobile wallet feature into the new iPhone models, making it easier for users to make payments with their Mastercard and other credit cards.
