Kraken, founded in 2011, is a U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange and bank that facilitates cryptocurrency-to-fiat trading and provides price data to Bloomberg Terminal. As of 2020, Kraken operates in 48 U.S. states and 176 countries, offering trading services for 40 cryptocurrencies. The platform played a significant role in aiding the recovery of funds lost during the 2014-2015 Mt. Gox bankruptcy.

According to CoinMarketCap, Kraken ranked as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange globally as of January 2021. In 2020, the company achieved a major milestone by becoming one of the first two crypto exchanges, alongside Avanti Financial Group, to receive a legal banking charter in the United States, granted by the state of Wyoming.
