By 2020, Kraken was accessible to users in 48 U.S. states and 176 countries, offering trading in 40 different cryptocurrencies. The company also played a key role in attempting to recover funds lost by investors during the 2014-15 Mt. Gox bankruptcy. As of January 2021, Kraken is ranked as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, according to CoinMarketCap. In 2020, Kraken, alongside Avanti Financial Group, became one of the first two cryptocurrency exchanges in the U.S. to be granted legal bank charters, both in Wyoming.
