Hyperledger
Hyperledger is an open-source collaborative initiative aimed at advancing blockchain technologies across various industries. Hosted by The Linux Foundation, it brings together global leaders from sectors such as finance, banking, IoT, supply chain, manufacturing, and technology.
The project’s goal is to foster cross-industry collaboration by developing blockchains and distributed ledgers, with a focus on improving the performance and reliability of these systems compared to cryptocurrency designs. This allows them to support global business transactions for major companies in technology, finance, and supply chains. Hyperledger works to integrate independent open protocols and standards through a framework designed for specific modules, including blockchains with their own consensus and storage mechanisms, along with services for identity, access control, and smart contracts. While there was initial confusion about whether Hyperledger would develop its own cryptocurrency, it has been clearly stated by the project’s leadership that it will never create one.
In early 2016, Hyperledger began accepting proposals to incubate codebases and other technologies, marking the beginning of several key developments. One early proposal led to the creation of Hyperledger Fabric, combining efforts from Digital Asset, Blockstream’s libconsensus, and IBM’s OpenBlockchain. In May 2016, Intel’s distributed ledger, Sawtooth, was also incubated.
The project announced its production-ready Hyperledger Fabric 1.0 on July 12, 2017, marking a milestone in its adoption, particularly within the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) market. Later that year, in July, the London Stock Exchange Group, in collaboration with IBM, unveiled a blockchain platform for digitally issuing shares of Italian companies based on Hyperledger Fabric. By August 2017, Oracle joined the Hyperledger consortium, announcing its Blockchain Cloud Service offering. In September 2017, the Royal Bank of Canada began utilizing Hyperledger for its interbank settlements between the US and Canada.
