Circle Internet Financial Limited
Circle, founded in October 2013 by Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville, is a financial technology company focused on revolutionizing the global economy through secure, efficient, and cost-effective digital money solutions. Circle’s flagship product, Circle Pay, enables users to store, send, and receive traditional fiat currencies seamlessly.
In September 2015, Circle became the first company to receive a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services, marking a milestone in cryptocurrency regulation. The following year, the British government granted Circle its first virtual currency licensure, further solidifying its international presence. The company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.
Initially, Circle Pay included a bitcoin wallet service, allowing users to buy and sell bitcoin. However, in December 2016, Circle shifted its focus away from being a consumer bitcoin exchange to concentrate on global social payments and next-generation blockchain technology. As part of this shift, Circle introduced a Bitcoin Blockchain-based remittance and messaging app aimed at serving unbanked populations.
On February 26, 2018, Circle acquired Poloniex, a cryptocurrency exchange, for $400 million. Leaked documents from this acquisition hinted at Circle’s ambition to become “The US’s First Regulated Crypto Exchange,” signaling its collaboration with the SEC to achieve this goal.
