BlackBerry Limited is a Canadian multinational company specializing in enterprise software and the Internet of Things (IoT). Originally known as Research In Motion (RIM), it is most widely recognized for developing the BlackBerry brand of smartphones and tablets. Under the leadership of CEO John S. Chen, the company transitioned into an enterprise software and services provider. BlackBerry’s products are used globally by businesses, automakers, and government agencies. These products include BlackBerry Cylance’s AI-driven cybersecurity solutions, the BlackBerry AtHoc emergency communication system (ECS), the QNX real-time operating system, and BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Manager), a Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) platform.

Founded in 1984 as Research In Motion by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, the company hired Jim Balsillie in 1992. Lazaridis and Balsillie served as co-CEOs until January 22, 2012. In November 2013, John S. Chen became CEO, initially focusing on outsourcing manufacturing to Foxconn and prioritizing software development. His current strategy emphasizes forming licensing partnerships with device manufacturers like TCL Communication and integrating BlackBerry’s software portfolio.
