Barclays
Barclays plc is a British multinational investment bank and financial services provider based in London. In addition to investment banking, the company operates across four main business sectors: personal banking, corporate banking, wealth management, and investment management.
The bank’s origins date back to a goldsmith banking business established in the City of London in 1690. James Barclay became a partner in 1736, and by 1896, Barclays merged with several banks, including Backhouse’s Bank and Gurney’s Bank, to form a joint-stock bank under the name Barclays and Co. Over time, Barclays expanded to become a nationwide institution. In 1967, it introduced the world’s first cash dispenser. Barclays has also acquired several notable companies, including London, Provincial and South Western Bank in 1918, British Linen Bank in 1919, Mercantile Credit in 1975, the Woolwich in 2000, and the North American operations of Lehman Brothers in 2008.
Barclays is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 100 Index, with a secondary listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Qatar Holdings, the investment arm of the State of Qatar, is its largest shareholder.
A 2011 study by Vitali et al. identified Barclays as the most influential transnational corporation in terms of corporate control over global financial stability and market competition, followed by AXA and State Street Corporation.
